Clearing in a city that has already been built on twice
Most Wilmington work is not raw land. It is an infill lot between two houses, the back corner of a New Hanover County property that has gone to vines, or a wooded parcel a builder needs opened up. The constraint is rarely the trees themselves. It is getting a machine in and material out without tearing up a driveway or a neighbor's yard.
The soil is coastal-plain sand over clay. It drains well in summer and turns greasy after the kind of rain Wilmington gets in late season. Mature loblolly and longleaf pine, laurel oak, sweetgum and red maple dominate the canopy. Underneath them you get greenbrier, Virginia creeper and poison ivy, and on older lots decades of privet and Chinese wisteria that have to be mulched rather than mowed.
Trees are also regulated here in a way they are not on a rural tract. The city and the county have rules covering the removal of certain trees, and they matter most on lots carrying large specimen hardwoods. Before anything comes down, we want to know which trees are protected and whether a permit is already in hand.
What makes a Wilmington job different
- Infill and subdivision lots with one narrow way in from the street
- Mature specimen hardwoods that may be protected and should not be touched
- Established invasive growth: privet, wisteria, English ivy, greenbrier
- Debris that has to leave the site, in a built-up area where burning is not an option

Reviews
What customers say about the work
These are published reviews of WR Land Services LLC. They are not identified as Wilmington jobs unless the customer said so.
★★★★★Wade impressed right off when he showed up exactly when he said for an estimate. Wade impressed on keeping me informed on a start date and was at my house exactly when he said he would be throughout the job. He did an excellent job clearing and only took about 2-3 weeks from estimate to completion on exactly what I wanted done and had the equipment to do it right.
Jon Meadows
★★★★★Wade was very professional, in his dealing with the estimate, ground breaking and final phase. He did first class work. He also stayed in contact with me on a weekly basis.

Frequently asked questions
Clearing land in Wilmington, NC: common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Wilmington?
The city regulates removal of certain trees inside the city limits, and unincorporated New Hanover County has its own requirements. Which category your tree falls into depends on species, size and where it sits on the lot, so it is worth checking before you schedule anything.
- confirm whether WR Land Services applies for tree removal permits on the customer's behalf in Wilmington, or whether the homeowner handles it.
What happens to the brush and debris?
On a mulching job the material stays on site as a mulch layer, which is usually what a Wilmington homeowner wants because nothing has to be trucked out. On a full clearing job the debris has to go somewhere, and in a built-up area that means hauling.
- confirm whether hauling and disposal are included in a quote or priced separately, and where material goes.
Is there a minimum job size for Wilmington?
Wilmington is the furthest point in the service area from our base, so travel is a real part of the cost on a small job and almost none of it on a larger one.
- confirm whether there is a minimum job size or a travel charge for New Hanover County, so this answer can state it plainly instead of hedging.
How much is your hourly rate?
All residential jobs are quoted as a flat rate price for the scope of work discussed, that means no hidden fees or surprises at the end.
How do your quotes work?
All quotes are free. Normally it helps speed up the process if after the initial phone call you text us with your Name, Address, Brief Description Of Work, and Photos. After that if we still can't accurately quote the job over the phone we will schedule a time with you to walk the property in person.
Why should I choose WR Land Services over the other guy?
We are a small family owned company who is very proud of our reputation and the work we do. Showing up on time, completing the job, and making sure you are satisfied is our top priority.
